Why it’s much more than a Chiropody treatment.
Are you having trouble with painful corns, ingrown toenails or verrucas, etc?
Chiropody is a common term used to describe treatment for nail and skin conditions effecting the feet from callus and corns to nail cutting, etc.
Podiatrists are medical professionals that require a BSc podiatry Degree and registration with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC). We specialise in the diagnosis and management of foot and lower limb conditions. At your first appointment with us our Podiatrist will give a thorough assessment to find out what is causing your issue before coming up with an appropriate treatment plan.
Corns and Callus
To put it simply, there are manor factors to consider about what may be causing callus build up or a painful corn, although, the main reason is pressure and friction. When removing a simple corn or callus it can provide instant relief, however, if we do not consider what the cause of this was and put preventions in place, the corn and callus will return. This can be related to foot structure, function, activities, footwear, etc.
Ingrown Toenail’s
When it comes to nail conditions this can be much the same. You may get ingrown toenails occasionally or repeatedly which are preventing you from doing the things you love or effecting the shoes you can wear. There are certain measure that can be put in place to help prevent this including long term treatments such as Nail Surgery which a very simple and effective procedure.
Vascular and Neurological Assessments
We regularly perform vascular and Neurological assessments, particularly when it comes to our Diabetic patients. The feet are furthest away from the heart and a healthy circulation is extremely important to maintain good foot health. Mix this with loss of sensation / numbness and it can be a recipe for disaster. This is important for everyone to have assessed regularly and we advise on attending for General Podiatry assessments as prevention is always better than the cure.
Thickened Toenails or Fungal Nails
Sometimes our nails can become traumatised, whether its is from a direct injury or repetitive stress on the nails gradually over time. This can cause damage to the nail bed which can cause our nails to become thickened which can make them difficult to manage or cut. This thickening can be reduced by attending for a routine Podiatry appointment which will help reduce stress on the thickened nails.
When a nail has become damaged it may become slightly detached from the nail bed. This can make it easy for fungal spores to become attached underneath the nail. Fungal nails tend to appear thickened with brown / yellow discolouration and almost brittle in texture. These can worsen ver time as the infection spreads. This is highly correlated with athletes foot which is a fungal skin condition which usually effects between the toes and along the soles of the foot.
Verrucas
Caused by the common Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) these warts on the sole of your feet can be notoriously difficult to treat. There are various treatment options available.
So in conclusion, while you’re relaxing and enjoying your Podiatry treatment, your Podiatrist is assessing and expertly forming appropriate treatment plans to help manage your foot and limb conditions.
